Southeast Texas Museum Association Meeting

Good morning everyone,
It’s been a while since we got together for a SETMA meeting and we’re going to remedy that lack. Jodi Larson has invited us to  travel to Lake Jackson on July 24th and visit the Lake Jackson Historical Museum.  We’ll have some fun, share some professional tricks of the trade and learn some excellent new information from our speakers.
During the SETMA meeting at the TAM annual meeting this year, officers were not chosen.  We’ll add that to our agenda for the July meeting.
Meeting Agenda:
Monday, July 24, 2017
10:00 am sign-in and meet & greet
10:30 am short business meeting and program
Stay for a tour of the site
Join your friends for lunch (details to be found in the meeting description)
Continue the fun and conversation

Jodi’s alluring invitation:
Summer SETMA will sizzle with TWO great programs in a double feature hosted by the Lake Jackson Historical Museum in Lake Jackson, TX.
Enjoy some fresh baked snacks and coffee to start off the meeting as we update each other on the goings-on around our region and get a debrief of SETMA@TAM in April.  Our program will start with a presentation from architecture Prof. Ziad Qureshi on how modern architecture fits into our regional history, connects the SE Texas area to global movements, and how to interpret and advocate for modern architecture at your site. To compliment this short presentation, we’ll add a 45 workshop. This active and mins-on mini-workshop will be “serious fun!” Presenters from local consultancy Museums Unbound will show us how museum training and professional development can be the highlight of your job instead of a tedious chore (and give you all the materials you need to steal this workshop and bring it to your own site!).
Bring your lunch (drinks and desserts will be provided) or order in as we workshop and dine in the air-conditioned comfort of the museum!
Who among us can resist an request like that?
Lake Jackson Historical Museum is located at 249 Circle Way, Lake Jackson, TX, 77566.
From the north, take 288 south from Houston and exit at This Way or Oak Drive. If Lake Jackson’s uniquely confusing streets get you lost, call 979-297-1570.
But wait there’s more…..
Greg Tyler of US Homeland Security Investigations has been collecting items used by the US Customs Service and wants to start a museum in the new Homeland Security building in Houston. As his original email to me stated, he “needs advice—no budget.”  I can relate to that.  He has some really cool stuff and needs  a few cases to display them.  If you can help Greg, please contact him at Gregory.l.tyler@ice.dhs.gov
The TAM Annual Meeting next April, 2018 will be held in Houston.  It’s been waaay too long since we hosted TAM, but they’ll be back next year.  Yay!
Come join us in July at Lake Jackson.
Regards,
Susan
