WEST COLUMBIA, Texas –– Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historic Site celebrates its annual Harvest Festival on Saturday, October 17th from 5 to 8 pm.
“The Harvest Festival has been a long standing tradition of hard work and reward,” said Dr. Chris Elliott, Site Director.
Guests can hop on a fun-filled hayride, take pictures with the site’s scarecrows, tour the barn to see tools and wagons used during harvests of the 1800s, stroll down to the garden to see sugar cane growing, learn how it’s harvested, and even taste a sample. Other activities include games, pumpkin crafts, refreshments, live music, and storytelling.
Also, this year’s Harvest Festival will celebrate the grand opening of a new exhibit featuring interactive displays on the individuals who lived and worked on the plantation throughout its history.
Admission into the event is $3 per person, with free admittance for children under 12 years of age. Parking will be outside of the site’s gates, along FM 2852/N . 13th St. Come and experience the fun and excitement of the harvest season at Varner-Hogg!
Varner-Hogg Plantation State Historic Site, a Texas Historical Commission property, was founded in 1824 by one of Texas’ first colonizers, Martin Varner, and was later home to the Patton family and finally a second home to Texas Gov. James S. Hogg. The site tells the real stories of the transition from family to family, and traces the role slavery played in the building and economics of the plantation. Site features include an antebellum mansion with period furnishings, remains of a sugar mill, family cemetery and a barn.
