A new public use area has been developed at Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge that features a 1.6 mile trail and a boardwalk across Otter Slough. The trail offers fantastic opportunities for wildlife observation, nature photography, and hiking. As part of our grand opening, there will be three special Saturday openings from 8 a.m. to noon on March 2, March 16, and March 30..
The new Otter Slough Trail and public use area is open Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information call Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge at 979-964-4011.
The boardwalk was made possible through a $25,000 Heritage Grant from The Dow Chemical Company, a $9,000 gift from by Kathrine G. McGovern, and in partnership with the Friends of Brazoria Wildlife Refuge. A birding and photo blind was made possible through a grant from the National Wildlife Refuge Foundation.

A Special Invitation for Refuge Friends and Master Naturalists.
Come and review the trail and our birding/photography blind on the three dates: March 2, March 16, and March 30. Let us know what you think, and in particular, help us identify good features along the trail to interpret. A trail map will be available for annotation and GPS units will be available for checkout.
From my experience, the Otter Slough Trail has impressive diversity for a trail of its length weaving through coastal prairie and oak/yaupon mixed forest (technically called Oak Savannah: Yaupon Motte) and along marsh and prairie potholes. At the beginning of the trail one passes two mima mounds.
